RPT Chairman James Dickey Statement on the Hiring of John Drogin as Senior Political Advisor

Thursday, June 15, 2017

Austin- “We could not be more excited to welcome John Drogin to the RPT as our Senior Political Advisor. Drogin offers insight and wisdom after years of working with both of our sitting Texas Senators. His expertise in strategic organization will be invaluable as the RPT seeks to provide support to our candidates in the upcoming 2018 mid-term elections.

Drogin’s experience serving in the roles of campaign manager, state director, and strategic consultant for Senators Cornyn and Cruz, combined with countless years of other political experience, provides him with a well-seasoned perspective. The Party will benefit from his wealth of knowledge as we work toward further advancing the Platform, principles, and vision entrusted to us by Republicans across Texas.”

RPT Chairman James Dickey Statement on the Gunman at Congressional Baseball Practice

Wednesday, June 14, 2017

“Texas Republicans join all Americans in prayer for Congressman Scalise, Congressional staff and family, and everyone who was affected by the horrific shooting this morning. As Texans, we pray especially for the quick recovery of the staffer of Rep. Roger Williams who was wounded. We give thanks that the immediate response of brave law enforcement officers prevented a greater tragedy.

Today our members of Congress will get back to what we sent them to Washington to do: work out the differences that divide us, and make America a better place. It is their work — not violence against fellow Americans we may disagree with — that will move our nation forward.”

County Chairs: Weekly Chairman’s Report (June 3-9)

Dear County Chairs,

It is an honor to be entrusted with the important work of our Party, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve you. This week we hit the ground running and are off to a great start.

It has become obvious in just this first week that the key to success for the RPT is for the Chair and the Party to maintain strong relationships with each of the constituents who are critical to our success: the SREC, donors, officeholders, press, the White House (since we have a Republican President), staff, the RNC, grassroots Republicans all across the state, and Texas’ Republican County Chairs. It was a pleasure to be able to connect with some in each of those groups this past week, and I’d like to share some updates on those interactions with you.

As promised, on Monday we emailed to all SREC members the presentations from our 2nd Quarter SREC meeting last weekend. We also involved relevant SREC members in events that had been arranged before my election so that we could receive their vital input and ensure that those events be successful. I’ve also had calls with many of you, and am very excited about what we will be able to accomplish together over the next year.

We are also preparing materials for our first Officials Committee meeting call. Our plan at this time is to hold the meeting on June 26. Per the bylaws, of course, any member of the SREC is welcome to participate. A second, muted line will be made available to guests who wish to listen to the call.

I am very excited to report that the increased clarity and visibility of the Republican Party of Texas has been rewarded with a warm reception from donors who have not previously given to the RPT. I have met personally and had calls with many of those donors to ensure our Party is equipped to fully support the Platform that has been entrusted to us. Donors have pledged roughly $100K so far, and we have already received this first week many times more in large non-event-related donations than was collected in the prior 5 months.

We are hard at work planning and preparing for more events and donor visits and calls, which will help us make up the $500,000 drop in RPT balances over the last three years.

On another encouraging note, we have also had 37 new signups for the Grassroots Club – an increase of 4% – in just this week. It is imperative that we continue encouraging would-be donors of every size to give to our Party as we continue to prove that we are the Party of the big tent. If you are not already a member of the Grassroots club, please join now.

The three-tiered Grassroots Club functionality we all heard about on Saturday is not ready for production with our current vendor. We are working on alternative approaches so that we can release such functionality as quickly as possible.

On Monday we sent the Governor the SREC’s letter on the Legislative Priorities. His office’s response was positive. Less than 20 hours later he released his call for a Special Session which included 10 items from our platform. We’ll be reaching out to the Lt. Governor, the Speaker, and all elected Republican members of the Texas legislature to do our part to make sure those items are passed successfully during this Special Session.

The number of elected Texas Republicans who have either reached out or taken my calls due to the potential value they see in the RPT is overwhelming. Each one I have spoken with has pledged to help us raise the funds necessary to get the RPT back at least to where we were three years ago, and to enable us to beat back the onslaught that will undoubtedly face us in next year’s midterm primaries.

More on elected official contact in the White House section below…

In the six days since becoming RPT Chairman, I have conducted three TV interviews, four radio interviews, and one podcast audio interview. The topics of discussion included becoming the new RPT Chairman, my trip to Houston with Vice President Pence, unifying the Party, the Comey testimony, controversial regular and special session bills, Texas politics, and looking ahead to 2018. You can see and hear some of these appearances by visiting our Facebook page here.

We will continue to get our message out across every media market in the state in an effort to showcase our values and welcome more voters into our Party.

White House:

Vice President Pence traveled to Houston to visit NASA’s Johnson Space Center where the new astronaut class of 2017 was introduced. I had the privilege of greeting him at the airport and was able to discuss some fundraising opportunities for the Party. He is a very gracious man and offered his support for our Party’s success.

You may have heard that we received a couple of staff resignations this week. We wish the absolute best for both Ann-Marie Birdwell and Mikenley Heller in their new opportunities.

Our first hire this week was Rachel Malone, a stellar grassroots activist with countless hours of grassroots training and volunteering for the Party. She is our new Director of Operations and can be reached at (512) 937-3006 or rmalone@texasgop.org for anything you might need.

We also took a staff photo today, and folks, we have a happy and motivated team here at the RPT HQ!

Today I spoke to RNC Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel about how the state and national Party can work together to Keep Texas Red. As we already know, the Democrats are putting a bullseye on Texas once again in 2018, and have already begun fielding multiple candidates in races where Republicans currently hold office across the state. Together, we will continue to build the necessary infrastructure to win up-and-down the ballot in a pivotal midterm election year.

I pledged to you that I would strongly support the Texas GOP platform, and I look forward to working with both the legislature and our grassroots volunteers to advance our platform and priorities during this special session.

In order to empower the grassroots with the necessary tools to make a difference, we have scheduled a webinar, “A Special Session Primer,” to be held Tuesday, June 13.

County Chairs:

We are hard at work on hiring a new Election and Training Manager who will provide County Chair training and support. As a former County Chair, I take that responsibility very seriously so we have recruited some former County Chairs to assist us in recruiting and evaluating candidates.

I’ve also had numerous positive calls with County Chairs and am excited about learning more about the best practices that we can work to spread across the state. While during those calls I have unfortunately already had to disappoint more than one County Chair by not being able to personally attend all of the many events being held, I have been able to confirm attendance by either me or another strong team member at almost every one.

Some of you have requested information on the Engagement and Outreach activities taking place, so we thought we’d share with you the reports we receive each week from those team members:

RPT Chairman James Dickey Statement on the Comey Hearings

Thursday, June 8th, 2017

Austin- “Today’s hearings proved to the American people that the investigation into the President’s staff have been full of misinformation. The fact that Mr. Comey willingly leaked part of a memo to a friend in hopes of getting a special counsel appointed is telling of how political Mr. Comey has truly become.”

Email: Donors Are Getting Excited

Email: Donors Are Getting Excited

Dear Fellow Texas Republican,

I was in Houston yesterday, where I had the privilege of meeting with Vice President Mike Pence. Let me tell you, there is excitement about the direction of our Party. We are not waiting to make moves to ensure the conservative future of Texas and you shouldn’t either. In fact, one donor contacted me and graciously offered to match all contributions from the grassroots between now and Friday up to $10,000! They want to know the excitement is really there and I need your help to prove it.

Let’s show the donors and the Vice President that we are working hard to keep Texas in the Republican column!  The Democrats aren’t taking any breaks and neither should we!  Every contribution made for the rest of the week will be doubled and that means double the work we are able to do to preserve conservative Texas values.

Please consider contributing today no matter how much! Anything you can chip in will be doubled and everything helps us in the fight for conservatism!

Thank You and God Bless Texas,

James Dickey
Republican Party of Texas

P.S. Please click here to contribute whatever you might be able to afford. Every amount helps us in our efforts to preserve conservative values in Texas!

SREC Letter to Governor Abbott Regarding Special Session

I sent the following letter to Governor Abbott on behalf of the SREC, thanking him for signing legislation improving border security, calling for a limited Article V convention of states, and withholding funds from sanctuary cities.

We also requested that should he call a special session that he include the following legislative priorities set by the delegates to the 2016 RPT State Convention and the SREC, consistent with the RPT Platform:

  • Passing constitutional carry
  • Abolishing abortion
  • Replacing the property tax
  • Advocating for school choice
  • Protecting citizens of Texas from unlawful encroachments on their First Amendment rights

President Trump’s Inauguration Speech

President Trump’s Inauguration Speech

Trump’s inauguration speech, like so many things in life – and especially non-specific political pronouncements, is a Rorsach test. People’s reactions to it are much less about what was actually said than they are about us, our ideological positions, and the subtext we read into the words because of what we’ve seen and heard from Trump and others in the past.

If you doubt that, check the actual text of the speech:

Chief Justice Roberts, President Carter, President Clinton, President Bush, President Obama, fellow Americans, and people of the world: thank you.

We, the citizens of America, are now joined in a great national effort to rebuild our country and to restore its promise for all of our people.

Together, we will determine the course of America and the world for years to come.

We will face challenges. We will confront hardships. But we will get the job done.

Every four years, we gather on these steps to carry out the orderly and peaceful transfer of power, and we are grateful to President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama for their gracious aid throughout this transition. They have been magnificent.

Today’s ceremony, however, has very special meaning. Because today we are not merely transferring power from one Administration to another, or from one party to another – but we are transferring power from Washington, D.C. and giving it back to you, the American People.

For too long, a small group in our nation’s Capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have borne the cost.

Washington flourished – but the people did not share in its wealth.

Politicians prospered – but the jobs left, and the factories closed.

The establishment protected itself, but not the citizens of our country.

Their victories have not been your victories; their triumphs have not been your triumphs; and while they celebrated in our nation’s Capital, there was little to celebrate for struggling families all across our land.

That all changes – starting right here, and right now, because this moment is your moment: it belongs to you.

It belongs to everyone gathered here today and everyone watching all across America.

This is your day. This is your celebration.

And this, the United States of America, is your country.

What truly matters is not which party controls our government, but whether our government is controlled by the people.

January 20th 2017, will be remembered as the day the people became the rulers of this nation again.

The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer.

Everyone is listening to you now.

You came by the tens of millions to become part of a historic movement the likes of which the world has never seen before.

At the center of this movement is a crucial conviction: that a nation exists to serve its citizens.

Americans want great schools for their children, safe neighborhoods for their families, and good jobs for themselves.

These are the just and reasonable demands of a righteous public.

But for too many of our citizens, a different reality exists: Mothers and children trapped in poverty in our inner cities; rusted-out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape of our nation; an education system, flush with cash, but which leaves our young and beautiful students deprived of knowledge; and the crime and gangs and drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much unrealized potential.

This American carnage stops right here and stops right now.

We are one nation – and their pain is our pain. Their dreams are our dreams; and their success will be our success. We share one heart, one home, and one glorious destiny.

The oath of office I take today is an oath of allegiance to all Americans.

For many decades, we’ve enriched foreign industry at the expense of American industry;

Subsidized the armies of other countries while allowing for the very sad depletion of our military;

We’ve defended other nation’s borders while refusing to defend our own;

And spent trillions of dollars overseas while America’s infrastructure has fallen into disrepair and decay.

We’ve made other countries rich while the wealth, strength, and confidence of our country has disappeared over the horizon.

One by one, the factories shuttered and left our shores, with not even a thought about the millions upon millions of American workers left behind.

The wealth of our middle class has been ripped from their homes and then redistributed across the entire world.

But that is the past. And now we are looking only to the future.

We assembled here today are issuing a new decree to be heard in every city, in every foreign capital, and in every hall of power.

From this day forward, a new vision will govern our land.

From this moment on, it’s going to be America First.

Every decision on trade, on taxes, on immigration, on foreign affairs, will be made to benefit American workers and American families.

We must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries making our products, stealing our companies, and destroying our jobs. Protection will lead to great prosperity and strength.

I will fight for you with every breath in my body – and I will never, ever let you down.

America will start winning again, winning like never before.

We will bring back our jobs. We will bring back our borders. We will bring back our wealth. And we will bring back our dreams.

We will build new roads, and highways, and bridges, and airports, and tunnels, and railways all across our wonderful nation.

We will get our people off of welfare and back to work – rebuilding our country with American hands and American labor.

We will follow two simple rules: Buy American and Hire American.

We will seek friendship and goodwill with the nations of the world – but we do so with the understanding that it is the right of all nations to put their own interests first.

We do not seek to impose our way of life on anyone, but rather to let it shine as an example for everyone to follow.

We will reinforce old alliances and form new ones – and unite the civilized world against Radical Islamic Terrorism, which we will eradicate completely from the face of the Earth.

At the bedrock of our politics will be a total allegiance to the United States of America, and through our loyalty to our country, we will rediscover our loyalty to each other.

When you open your heart to patriotism, there is no room for prejudice.

The Bible tells us, “how good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity.”

We must speak our minds openly, debate our disagreements honestly, but always pursue solidarity.

When America is united, America is totally unstoppable.

There should be no fear – we are protected, and we will always be protected.

We will be protected by the great men and women of our military and law enforcement and, most importantly, we are protected by God.

Finally, we must think big and dream even bigger.

In America, we understand that a nation is only living as long as it is striving.

We will no longer accept politicians who are all talk and no action – constantly complaining but never doing anything about it.

The time for empty talk is over.

Now arrives the hour of action.

Do not let anyone tell you it cannot be done. No challenge can match the heart and fight and spirit of America.

We will not fail. Our country will thrive and prosper again.

We stand at the birth of a new millennium, ready to unlock the mysteries of space, to free the Earth from the miseries of disease, and to harness the energies, industries and technologies of tomorrow.

A new national pride will stir our souls, lift our sights, and heal our divisions.

It is time to remember that old wisdom our soldiers will never forget: that whether we are black or brown or white, we all bleed the same red blood of patriots, we all enjoy the same glorious freedoms, and we all salute the same great American Flag.

And whether a child is born in the urban sprawl of Detroit or the windswept plains of Nebraska, they look up at the same night sky, they fill their heart with the same dreams, and they are infused with the breath of life by the same almighty Creator.

So to all Americans, in every city near and far, small and large, from mountain to mountain, and from ocean to ocean, hear these words:

You will never be ignored again.

Your voice, your hopes, and your dreams, will define our American destiny. And your courage and goodness and love will forever guide us along the way.

Together, We Will Make America Strong Again.

We Will Make America Wealthy Again.

We Will Make America Proud Again.

We Will Make America Safe Again.

And, Yes, Together, We Will Make America Great Again. Thank you, God Bless You, And God Bless America.

Good Training on Political Organizing

I attended the “Unite to Win” training put on today in Travis county by the Texas Federation of Republican Women, the Texas Republican County Chairman’s Association, the Republican Party of Texas and the Abbott campaign. Among other things, the campaign shared the following:
